On September 27th, Mr. Cateon sent out an email with a link to sign up for our November 1st and 2nd parent conferences. If you have not signed up yet, please refer to his email for the link, or contact me so I can help you sign up.
The first term conferences provide important opportunities to check on your child's progress in 4th grade so there are no surprises when report cards are sent home about a month later.
On Friday, the 4th grade teachers sent home a list of supplies we are going to need for our upcoming science units. If you are able to donate any of the supplies from the list we would greatly appreciate it. We are very excited to begin these units!
The class as a whole did a great job on our recent assessment on the Northeast Region of the United States. The assessments have been returned. Please ask your child to share it with you. We are now learning about the Southeast. For this assessment, students will be expected to know the correct abbreviations for the state names as well as the capitals.
Yesterday, we started our new Reading Street unit, which focuses on the value of work and play. Our first selection, What Jo Did is one of my favorites. It is written in poetry form, and reviews cause and effect, while demonstrating that individuals can do anything they work hard to accomplish. We are also continuing our work with the novel Stone Fox.
Students have received new spelling words this week. They are working on words with -s and -es. They are able to use Spelling City at home for practice.
We have begun using ST math in the classroom to support our math curriculum. The students seem very excited to use this fun online program once again.
Homework:
Students have Accelerated Reader homework every night. They are expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes and then write a 4th grade quality paragraph to summarize their reading. Their writing is expected to be completed in their AR notebook, in their neatest writing. Fourth grade quality paragraphs include at least 5 sentences that include specific details, and are grammatically correct. Incomplete or messy work is expected to be redone during the student's recess.
Students will also have math homework several nights per week to coincide with the math lesson of the day. This homework is meant to review the skill that we learned in class that day. If your child struggles on the math homework, please feel free to work through the task with them, but just make a note on it so I know that I may need to provide your child with additional instruction on that skill.
I post the homework each day on the board and I give students at least 5 minutes to copy it into their planners. I do ask them to copy it exactly the way I post it so there is not confusion about what they are expected to do each night.
Please feel free to email me if you ever have questions about the homework.
